Description European Hornbeam (Carpinus Betulus) 15 seeds (#81)
A deciduous, dense and long-lived tree or large shrub valued for its regular habit and excellent tolerance to shaping. Typically grows 10–20 m tall but can be kept much lower by pruning. Leaves are oval and fresh green, turning yellow to brown in autumn. Widely used for hedging, avenues and formal landscape designs.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Very well adapted to Northern and Eastern European climates. Performs best in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moderately moist soil. Tolerates heavier clay soils and short dry periods. Suitable for urban environments.
CARE
Highly tolerant of pruning and suitable for various formal shapes or dense hedges. Trim once or twice during the growing season to maintain form. Young plants should be watered during prolonged drought. Spring fertilization supports vigorous growth.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Soak seeds 12-24 hours in a warm water.
Stratification/ cold treatment: seeds need 60-90 days pre-chill period. Seeds can be stratified in dampened peat or sand, in a plastic box or bag at 4°C or 5°C in a refrigerator. The seeds should not be frozen or in a wet medium.
Sow Carpinus seeds on the surface of a Well drained seed sowing mix at about 20°C.When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a cold frame until they are at least 15cm tall before planting them into their permanent positions. Grow the plants on for two years in the seedbed and then plant them out into their permanent positions in the winter
