Description Moldavian dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica) seeds - 100 grams (#2414)
The plant is an annual and relatively small in size, growing up to about 50 cm in height. It has long, serrated leaves and white or purple flowers. Flowering lasts for approximately five weeks, from the second half of July until the end of August.
Moldavian dragonhead produces fairly deep flowers with wide throats, allowing bees to collect nectar easily. Depending on growing conditions, honey yield reaches approximately 300–600 kg per hectare. The leaves and stems contain high amounts of essential oils that are highly attractive to bees. For this reason, the leaves can be used to rub swarm boxes, hives, or even hands, which helps to calm bees. The essential oil extracted from Moldavian dragonhead, known as citral, is widely used in the soap and perfume industries.
PLANT APPEARANCE
The plant grows to about 40–60 cm in height and forms a neat, compact habit. Leaves are elongated, slightly serrated, and strongly lemon-scented. Flowers appear in dense terminal spikes, usually blue or violet, creating a striking visual effect and attracting bees from afar.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Dragonhead prefers sunny, warm locations with light, well-drained soil. It thrives in moderately fertile soil and does not tolerate waterlogging. While relatively drought-tolerant, regular watering promotes more vigorous growth and prolonged flowering.
CARE
This is a low-maintenance plant. Regular but moderate watering and removal of faded flower spikes will extend the blooming period. Fertilization is optional, but light feeding can enhance aroma and overall plant vigor.
INTERESTING FACT
Although often called Moldavian lemon balm, dragonhead is not botanically related to true lemon balm. Its intense lemon fragrance makes it popular for teas, desserts, aromatic blends, and even natural insect repellents.
