Description Scarlet Flax (Linum Grandiflorum Rubrum) 200 seeds (#1482)

Red flax (Linum rubrum) is a charming annual from the flax family (Linaceae), prized for its vivid scarlet flowers and elegant form. Known for its silky, luminous petals, it brings vibrancy and contrast to any summer garden. Popular in borders, rock gardens, and mixed flower beds, red flax adds a natural yet striking color accent to garden compositions.
PLANT APPEARANCE
This delicate plant grows 30–45 cm tall with slender, branching stems and narrow bluish-green leaves. The flowers are 2–3 cm wide with five silky petals in bright red, each marked by a darker, almost black center. Blooms open in sunshine and close at dusk or on cloudy days, creating a dynamic display throughout the season.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Prefers full sun and light, well-drained soil of moderate fertility. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils. Sow seeds directly outdoors from late April to mid-May; seedlings appear within 1–2 weeks. Space plants 10–15 cm apart. Red flax is sensitive to transplanting, so direct sowing is best.
CARE
Very easy to care for. Water regularly but moderately – overwatering can reduce flowering. Fertilize sparingly to avoid excessive foliage growth. Deadheading encourages more blooms and prolongs the flowering period. It often self-seeds, reappearing naturally the following year.
INTERESTING FACT
Often called the “fire of summer,” red flax dazzles with its luminous scarlet petals that seem to glow in the sun. The Linum genus has a long history of use – from producing linen fabric and linseed oil to serving as inspiration in art and design. Red flax combines that legacy with pure ornamental beauty.

Seeds can also be started indoors in March–April, but flax dislikes transplanting, so direct sowing is preferred.

Germination takes about 10–14 days.
Space seedlings 10–15 cm apart.

USEFUL INFO
If there is one thing that makes ornamental plant seeds stubbornly refuse to germinate, it is the lack of a cold period. In nature, it is simple: a seed falls to the ground in autumn, spends winter in moisture and low temperatures, and wakes up in sp..
