Description Wild Teasel (Dipsacus Fullonum) seeds - 100 grams (#1005)
Wild teasel is a large biennial plant, resistant to frost and other unfavorable weather conditions. It grows wild in various types of forests, thickets, along roadsides, and near rivers and ponds. Its soil requirements are low – it prefers neutral pH, moderately fertile soil, but can also grow in gravelly or rocky substrates.
Under favorable soil and weather conditions, the plant can reach impressive heights of up to 2 meters. The stem is thick, angular, and covered with spines. The lance-shaped leaves are sharply pointed, sessile, and attach directly to the stem, forming a natural cup that collects rainwater.
Teasel is highly nectar-rich. From one hectare of forage, up to 300 kg of honey and approximately 250 kg of pollen can be obtained. For this reason, it is well worth planting near apiaries. Its pleasantly scented flowers attract not only bees but also butterflies.
The plant reaches 150–200 cm in height. Stems are thick, upright, and spiny. Leaves are large, lance-shaped, sessile, and clasp the stem, often forming small basins that collect rainwater. Flower heads are large and oval, composed of small lilac to violet flowers. Even after flowering, dried seed heads remain decorative throughout winter.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Wild teasel thrives in sunny locations but tolerates light shade. It is undemanding regarding soil and grows well in moderately fertile, neutral soils, including gravelly or rocky substrates. It does not tolerate waterlogging but is highly drought-resistant once established.
CARE
This is a very low-maintenance plant. In the first year it forms a leaf rosette, flowering in the second year. Watering is only necessary during establishment. Fertilization is not required. To prevent self-seeding, flower heads can be removed before seeds mature.
INTERESTING FACT
The water-filled leaf cups of wild teasel are believed to act as a natural defense against crawling insects. Dried flower heads are highly valued in floristry and winter arrangements.
